Our rating for warmth – 7/10

The Cloud Chaser has a Waterproof, windproof, breathable three-layer soft-shell upper fabric that protects dogs from the elements. It is similar in fit to the Powder Hound, but differs in that the upper material is fully waterproof and it doesn’t have synthetic insulating material. This coat is meant to fit more snugly and maintain core body heat. This coat can be ideal for a full range of motion in deeper snow. The underside is similar to the Powder Hound and is made of the same stretch knit fabric, allowing for a full range of motion.
What we like best - While similar to the Powder Hound coat, we like that this has a bit of a tougher outer shell. It would be a great option alone, but could also work as an under layer. A harness works great over it by the way.

Our rating for warmth – 7/10

While not as thick as some of the other coats on this list, the Element Jacket offers a strong 600 denier polyester fabric outer shell that is lined with non-pilling fleece. This makes it one of the tougher jackets on our list which can hold up well to some abuse and won’t snag when your dog is running through thick brush. It offers great protection from wind and water and has a unique stretchable neck opening made of Neo-Xpand™ material. This offers protection of the chest area while also being easy for your dog to move around in. There is reflective piping for nighttime visibility and a waterproof access zipper on top for attaching a leash to a collar or harness underneath.
What we like best - The durability. This coat can handle a beating. If I was going to let a dog loose in thick, thorny brush and didn't them coming back with a coat torn to shreds, this would be the coat. The leash portal with zipper design is also fantastic. We haven't found anything else like it.

How to Choose the Right Winter Coat for Your Dog
Below is a “ruff”? guide to helping you choose from our selection of the best dog winter coats this season. Reviewing the considerations below will help you make sure the coat you select is the best option for you and your dog and will best meet their needs.
Climate
The first thing to consider is the area and climate you live. Dogs living in more temperament climates will likely be fine with a lighter weight jacket or sweater. For areas where temperatures frequently plunge near or below freezing, an insulated weatherproof coat will be a better option. Some coats come with protective outer shells that repel water making them good for snowy environments and areas that might be misty and cold. Just like human apparel, insulated puffer jackets are some of the warmest options available. While all dogs don’t need a winter coat to keep warm, short hair breeds, older dogs, and dogs that will be in the elements for extended periods of time will likely benefit.
Design
Another important consideration is the overall design of the coat. Does the coat go over your dog’s head? Does it attach with Velcro wraps, adjustable clips? Is it meant to be worn as an underlayer or does it have an access point for a leash to attach to an underlying harness? Some coats are hooded while others are not. Some are fleece lined, while others may be Sherpa lined. Take time to consider which might be best for your dog by looking over the features listed on each product page listed and the benefits of each. Many coats these days have optional rear elastic leg straps to help secure the rear of the coat during active play. Keep in mind that these straps are optional. We have found that some customers like using them while others do not.
Size
Sizing is one of the most important considerations. Taking time to look over the manufacturer sizing guide and quickly measuring your dog will ensure you get the right fit the first time. Unlike human apparel there is no standardized sizing. Each coat brand has different sizing options. A size large in one brand may be vastly different than the same size in another. Keeping this in mind will prevent frustration and make sure you get your pup all bundled up and cozy as soon as possible.
Materials
Depending on the area, you may want to consider what the outer shell is made of. Some materials may hold up better in thick brush situations. Then of course there is the overall look of the coat. Some brands have more aesthetic appeal than others. Of course, we try to carry the most functional and best-looking coats on the market ?
